Why Anxiety Can Feel Stronger in the Morning—And What You Can Do About It
Do you ever wake up feeling tense, restless, or worried—even if you’ve had a decent night’s sleep?
You’re not alone. Many of my clients say their anxiety feels at its worst first thing in the morning.
Here’s why:
When you are about to fall asleep at night and first thing in the morning, your mind is far more open to suggestions. This includes your imagination. Anything that you might have been thinking can trigger the unconscious mind to believe it is actually happening. Such as catastrophising, negative thoughts and images.
Every morning, your body naturally produces cortisol (the “stress hormone”) as part of your body’s natural circadian rhythm. It’s designed to help you wake up and get ready for the day. But if you already experience anxiety, this cortisol spike can make you feel like you’re starting the day on the back foot.
If you have been suffering from the experiences of anxiety for a while, your body may have become used to a heightened state of alert, which is often why for no apparent reason the anxiety feelings rise up out of nowhere.
The good news? You can reset this response—naturally and effectively.
A Simple Morning Reset: Walking It Off
Movement is one of the most powerful (and underrated) ways to reduce anxiety.
Even a short walk has measurable benefits:
✅Just 1 minute of walking starts to elevate your blood flow.
✅ Just 5 minutes of walking starts to lift your mood.
✅ Around 10 minutes, cortisol levels begin to drop.
✅ Around 15 minutes, blood sugar reduces.
✅ At 30 minutes, overthinking and mental chatter calm significantly.
And if you can build in a longer walk a few times a week—around an hour—your brain gets a boost of feel-good chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. These support deeper sleep, better mood, and more resilience against anxiety the next morning.
Tip: Try heading out early, before you dive into your day. Bonus points if you can walk somewhere green or by water—nature adds another layer of calm. 🌿
Try This for Yourself
Start with one short walk tomorrow morning and notice how your body and mind respond. With consistency, morning anxiety doesn’t just reduce—it transforms into a calmer, clearer start to your day.
