“The three hardest words to say aren’t ‘I love you’.
They’re ‘I need help.’” — Elton John
There’s an interesting lesson in this quote for the workplace as well as everyday life.
We often associate strength with coping.
Being capable.
Being dependable.
Getting the job done.
Not letting people see when we're struggling.
But sometimes the strongest thing a person can do is recognise when they need support.
An employee overwhelmed by pressure.
A business owner carrying too much responsibility.
A senior professional whose anxiety is beginning to affect their confidence or decision-making.
None of these situations are signs of weakness.
And asking for help doesn't mean handing over responsibility for solving the problem.
It can simply mean recognising that you don't have to solve everything alone.
“I need help” can be the beginning of change, rather than an admission of failure.
Remember when you helped someone when they asked for help.
Did you feel like ripping them to shreds, or judge them badly?
i assume no is the answer !
Did you actually feel good about helping them?
so if it feels good to help someone, then perhaps we can also perceive things differently when we are the ones asking for help.
Generally, others like to feel that they can help.
Perhaps we should make those three words a little easier to say.
