Why Do I Keep Having the Same Thoughts? (The Overthinking Loop Explained)

Author: Nigel Edwards

“I’ve already thought about this… so why is it still there?”

One of the most frustrating experiences is this:

You’ve already analysed something.
You’ve already tried to understand it.

And yet… it keeps coming back.

👉 This is the overthinking loop.

If this is affecting you, you can book support here:

Why your brain repeats thoughts

Your brain is designed to solve problems.

But sometimes, it misidentifies something as a problem when it isn’t.

So it keeps returning to it:

  • “Just in case”

  • “To be sure”

  • “To resolve uncertainty”

This is closely linked to intrusive thoughts:

The loop explained

It works like this:

Thought → Analysis → Temporary relief → Doubt → Thought returns

Each time you engage with the thought:
👉 You reinforce the pattern

Why logic doesn’t stop it

You might have already told yourself:

  • “This doesn’t make sense”

  • “I’ve already worked this out”

But the loop continues.

That’s because this is not just logical—it’s emotional and habitual.

You can read more about this pattern here:

How this links to anxiety

Overthinking increases:

  • Mental tension

  • Uncertainty

  • Emotional stress

Which feeds back into anxiety:

How to break the loop

The solution isn’t more thinking.

It’s:

  • Reducing engagement with the thought

  • Changing your response to it

  • Allowing the loop to weaken

This is exactly what I help clients do in sessions.

You don’t need to keep analysing everything

You can have a quieter mind without needing to solve every thought.
